Artist's Comments

Aroha is the main character in a story currently in conception. Whether or not it eventually comes to fruition, is another matter entirely.

Her name translages as "love" and she is a Weka, a species of flightless New Zealand rail renowned for their inordinate curiosity and cheekiness. They are sometimes mistaken for kiwi.

Here she is as both a chick and an adult.

those weka look much cuter than the kiwi. I can't see how someone can mistaken it. Well I guess they could from a distance huh. The only major difference is the beak isn't long and curved. I guess it eats something different than the kiwi :giggle: well that's good because then there won't be competition between the two birds

Wekat are diurnal, kiwis nocturnal. They also eat almost *anything*. And as for the confusion thing? They're brown and flightless, but the shape is all different too - but it still happens, probably aided by "helpful' New Zealanders having some fun with the tourists!

There has been some discussion on them being made the national bird instead - they're curious, intelligent and have more personality (IMO) then kiwis. Hence why they're going to be my species of focus.
